Supreme Court refuses to entertain plea by Khalistani leader and MP Amritpal Singh challenging NSA detention
Court directs Singh to approach Punjab and Haryana High Court, urges expeditious disposal within six weeks
The Supreme Court has declined to entertain the plea filed by Waris-de-Punjab chief and Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh challenging the extension of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). A Bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria directed Singh to seek relief from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, emphasizing that the High Court should decide his petition expeditiously, preferably within six weeks.
Amritpal Singh has been detained in Assam under the NSA since 2023 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Khadoor Sahib constituency in 2024. His detention has been extended multiple times, with the latest extension linked to an investigation into the October 2024 murder of YouTuber Gurpreet Singh Harinau in Faridkot. A Special Investigation Team has named Singh and a Canada-based Khalistani operative, Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dalla, in connection with the case.
While the NSA detention has been lifted for nine of Singh’s associates after nearly two years, it remains in force against Singh alone, currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail in Assam.
