About the Opportunity
The International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) offers internships for graduate students with a strong interest in international investment law and investor–State dispute settlement. Interns are embedded in one of ICSID’s legal teams, contributing directly to casework and key institutional projects at the leading institution for international investment dispute settlement.
Eligibility
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree programme (including LL.M., Ph.D., or rising 3L/third‑year law degree or equivalent). They should demonstrate a strong interest and foundational knowledge of international investment law and arbitration; possess excellent legal research, drafting, and analytical skills; be fluent in English (French or Spanish is an advantage); and be able to provide written confirmation from their university that they will either receive academic credit or a university‑sponsored stipend for the internship.
Duration and Timing
Internships are offered three times a year. The upcoming cohort runs from September to December 2026 (Fall). Typical internship duration is 3–6 months, depending on the cycle and individual arrangements.
Location and Mode
Internship is primarily based at ICSID’s office in Washington, D.C., in an in‑person mode. Applicants must be legally authorised to work in the United States (U.S. citizens or permanent residents, or eligible for an F‑1 or G‑4 visa) and able to cover their own travel, accommodation, and living expenses. Medical insurance for the internship period is recommended.
Roles and Responsibilities
Interns assist legal teams in drafting submissions, case‑management documents, and institutional correspondence; conduct legal research on international investment law, treaties, and arbitration practice; support case‑administration tasks; and contribute to internal research and policy projects on investor–State dispute settlement.
Perks and Benefits
Interns receive valuable hands‑on experience in international investment arbitration under senior legal professionals; a formal internship certificate; and the opportunity to network with leading practitioners, arbitrators, and policymakers. The internship is generally unpaid, though some universities may provide stipends or academic credit.
Application Deadline
30 June 2026 for the September–December 2026 (Fall) cohort.
