About the Opportunity
The selected candidate will join the General Counsel’s Organization (GCO) and be a key member of the Legal Team of American Express India. This is a high-impact role supporting multiple business functions in a fast-paced, compliance-driven environment.
Roles and Responsibilities
• Provide legal and regulatory advice in areas such as banking, credit cards, merchant services, payments, anti-money laundering, data privacy, and more
• Draft, review, and negotiate business/commercial contracts, product documents, internal policies, and terms and conditions
• Advise and collaborate with business units and support functions (Compliance, Finance, Risk, Treasury, Controllership, etc.)
• Interpret and communicate laws and regulatory changes to business stakeholders
• Represent American Express in regulatory, legal, and industry meetings
• Provide guidance on product development, marketing, and operational frameworks
• Manage external legal counsel and ensure alignment with allocated legal budgets
• Remain updated on relevant regulations and maintain working knowledge of Indian legal systems
• Advocate internally to protect brand integrity and manage legal risk
• Contribute strategically to enterprise-wide initiatives and align legal advice with business growth goals
Eligibility Criteria
• Qualified lawyer from a premier Indian law institute with a minimum of 8 years of post-qualification experience
• Prior experience in law firms and/or corporate legal departments preferred
• Expertise in legal drafting, regulatory advisory, and transaction structuring
• Strong English communication skills with the ability to simplify complex legal concepts
• High emotional intelligence and ability to thrive in diverse, fast-changing environments
• Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
• Curious, strategic thinker with the ability to connect legal advice with broader business impacts
• Strong stakeholder management skills and comfort in influencing across organizational levels
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
