The Union government has decided to extend the tenure of Senior Advocate R Venkataramani as Attorney General for India for the next two years. Venkataramani, who took over the position from KK Venugopal in 2022, was originally appointed for a three-year term set to conclude on September 30, 2025. He confirmed that his tenure has now been extended.

Born in Pondicherry on April 13, 1950, Venkataramani enrolled as a lawyer in July 1977 with the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu, later shifting his practice to the Supreme Court in 1979. He was designated Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court in 1997. Over his career, he has represented the Central government, various State governments, universities, and public sector undertakings before the Supreme Court and High Courts.

The Attorney General for India is appointed by the President under Article 76(1) of the Constitution on the advice of the Central government. This extension reinforces Venkataramani’s role as the chief legal advisor to the government of India.
