Delhi High Court asks Central government about plan to tackle DeepSeek AI concerns
Bench emphasizes need for early intervention on privacy, security, and sovereignty issues related to Chinese AI chatbot
A Division Bench of the Delhi High Court comprising Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela sought updates from Central Government Standing Counsel Ishkaran Bhandari regarding the government’s strategy to address issues raised by the Chinese AI chatbot DeepSeek. The Court noted the importance of addressing concerns related to privacy violations, individual security, and threats to India’s sovereignty and integrity at the earliest stage.
The matter arose out of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Bhavna Sharma, who urged the court to direct the framing of regulatory guidelines and to block access to such potentially harmful AI platforms. The bench granted time to the government counsel to finalize instructions on the matter, which will be heard alongside similar cases.
The Delhi High Court had earlier, in February, asked the government to obtain instructions on the broader issue of AI tool accessibility and regulation in India.
