Delhi High Court Grants Interim Relief to NDTV in Trademark Infringement Suit
Court Restraining Websites, Social Media Platforms from Misusing NDTV’s Well-Known Trademark
The Delhi High Court has granted an ex-parte ad-interim injunction in favor of New Delhi Television Limited (NDTV) to restrain defendants from infringing upon its registered trademark “NDTV” and engaging in acts of passing off and copyright violation. The Court observed that the defendants were unauthorizedly using the NDTV mark and deceptively similar variants, creating the false impression of affiliation with NDTV.
Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora held that such unauthorized use, especially through domain names, websites, social media handles, and messaging platforms, could cause irreparable harm to NDTV that cannot be compensated monetarily. The defendants were therefore restrained from using NDTV’s marks in these manners.
The Court directed domain registrars to suspend 13 infringing domains and disclose the registrants’ details. Google and YouTube were ordered to take down 35 channels using NDTV trademarks and provide related account information. Telegram, X Corporation, and Meta Platforms were directed to block multiple groups, handles, and pages misusing NDTV’s brand and to disclose associated user data. The Department of Telecommunications and Ministry of Electronics and IT were instructed to notify ISPs and telecom providers to block access to infringing websites.
NDTV, founded in 1988, has used the “NDTV” mark continuously since 2003, building substantial goodwill and was recognized as a well-known trademark by the Trade Marks Registry in early 2025. The suit was filed following the discovery of several unauthorized websites and social media accounts passing off as NDTV, which posed a threat to its brand integrity and public trust.
The case is ongoing with further hearings scheduled in October and February 2026.
Advocates Kripa Pandit, Prabhu Tandon, and Christopher Thomas represented NDTV, while the defendants and government bodies were represented by respective counsels.
