Delhi High Court stays trial court case against BJP spokesperson booked for disclosing details of POCSO victim
Proceedings against Praveen Shankar Kapoor paused pending further hearing
The Delhi High Court has stayed the trial court proceedings against Praveen Shankar Kapoor, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson, in a case filed for allegedly sharing the first information report (FIR) related to a Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act case on social media. Justice Ravinder Dudeja ordered that the trial court proceedings remain in abeyance until the High Court hears the matter on March 23, 2026.
Kapoor was booked in June 2021 under the POCSO Act after posting a copy of the FIR and images of the accused, a 42-year-old woman charged with sexually assaulting and threatening a minor girl. Police contended that sharing sensitive details of victims in POCSO cases is illegal, leading to FIR registration.
Senior Advocate Pavan Narang, representing Kapoor, argued that the screenshots Kapoor uploaded were not legible and did not disclose the victim’s identity. The court noted that no viewer of the posts could ascertain victim details, and thus allowed the stay of proceedings.
