Jawaharlal Nehru University scholar Sharjeel Imam seeks interim bail to contest Bihar elections
Imam files two-week bail plea to participate in upcoming assembly polls amid incarceration in Delhi riots conspiracy case
Sharjeel Imam has approached a Delhi court seeking interim bail for two weeks, from October 15 to October 29, to contest the Bihar assembly elections. The application was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai of the Karkardooma Courts.
Imam is currently in jail pertaining to the Delhi riots conspiracy case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Though he has been granted bail in other charges related to the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) protests, his regular bail in the conspiracy case was denied by the Delhi High Court on September 2. His appeal against this order is pending with the Supreme Court.
In the interim bail application, Imam described himself as a “political prisoner and a student activist” and intends to contest the elections from the Bahadurgan seat as an independent candidate.
