About the Opportunity

• Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is hiring Assistant Legal Advisers for the Ministry of Law and Justice.
• A total of 16 positions are available.


Eligibility

Educational Qualification
• Degree in Law from a recognized University or equivalent.

Experience
• Member of a State Judicial Service for not less than seven years, or
• Held a superior post in the legal department of a State for not less than seven years, or
• Central Government servant with at least seven years’ experience in legal affairs, or
• Possess a Master’s Degree in Law with not less than five years’ teaching or research experience in Law, or
• Qualified legal practitioner with not less than 30 years of practice.

Additional Notes
• “Qualified legal practitioner” includes:
 • Advocate or pleader with at least seven years’ practice.
 • Attorney of the High Court of Bombay/Calcutta with at least five years’ practice.
 • Combination of attorney and advocate practice totaling at least five years.
• “Superior post” means a non-clerical State Government post requiring a Law Degree.
• Periods of service in judicial, legal department, Central Government, or legal practice can be combined when computing eligibility.
• “Legal affairs” broadly covers legal advice, conducting litigation, and appearing in courts or quasi-judicial forums.
• Experience is counted post-qualification (LL.B or LL.M, as applicable).


Responsibilities

• Provide legal advice on matters referred by various Ministries/Departments of the Government of India.
• Handle government litigation work.
• Conduct court cases and appear in courts on behalf of the Central Government.
• Undertake administrative and other assigned work.


Probation

• Two years


Location

• New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru
• Liable to serve anywhere in India


Pay scale

• As per 7th CPC – Level-11 (₹67,700–2,08,700) in Pay Matrix
• Initial emoluments: ₹67,700 plus DA (excluding HRA & TA)
