Tata Steel operates integrated manufacturing facilities in Jamshedpur and Kalinganagar, with captive iron ore, coal, dolomite, chromite, and manganese mines spread across Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha. With operations in 26 countries and around 80,500 employees, its Jamshedpur plant (10 MTPA) has been producing steel at the same site for over 100 years.
Role Description
• Handle litigation arising from indirect taxes, especially GST cases, before adjudicating and appellate authorities (Commissioner (Appeal))
• Conduct legal analysis of statutory provisions, notifications, and circulars related to excise, service tax, and customs
• Coordinate with Indirect Taxes CoE and other internal/external stakeholders for issue analysis and litigation documentation
• Collect information and data for drafting replies to SCNs or appeals
• Conduct legal research using online databases to build case arguments
• Support Indirect Tax and Legal teams with updated case laws, circulars, and internal opinions
• Draft replies to Show Cause Notices and petitions for appeals
• Represent Tata Steel before adjudicating and appellate authorities, including Commissioner (Appeal) and CESTAT
• Brief and support external legal counsel with factual and legal case notes
Eligibility
• LLB (3-year or 5-year course) from a recognized institution
Required Skills
• Minimum 3 years of active experience handling GST litigation
• Practical knowledge of GST, Excise, and Service Tax adjudication/appellate procedures
• Strong understanding of statutes on GST, Central Excise, Service Tax, and related rules (CENVAT, valuation, appeals, tariff, etc.)
• Knowledge of allied laws: CPC, IPC, CrPC, Indian Evidence Act, Indian Contract Act
• Strong analytical and drafting skills
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to brief advocates effectively and mentor junior colleagues
• Self-motivated, result-oriented professional
• Proficient with MS Office tools (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
